Mom I don't wanna lay on the couch all day!
Mom I don’t wanna
lay on the couch all day!
December 2014: Graduation from my bachelor program
January 2015: I was extremely bored and I saw nothing good
coming to me before the beginning of a master the following September
This was my time line, being bored doing nothing until the
new courses would have actually started. I am not that kind of person that lays
on the couch all day, eating mom’s food,
and using mom’s money. For this reasons I
started checking what I could do to make a good use out of this huge amount of
spare time
Looking at all kinds of job offers and internships I’ve been suggested from my sister to
try to find an Au-Pair job somewhere in Europe, so that I could learn a new
language, and considering I already knew English it would have been an easy
choice.
I go on a few websites and I make my profile. A few weeks
later a lovely family sent me a message and we started a conversation that
brought me to get everything ready and start a new life in Bad Soden (near
Frankfurt) in the coming February for just 5 months.
I was very scared. What did I say yes to?
Was I prepared to jump to someone else home and be the
educator, cook, entertainer, cleaner, driver and motivator of 2 little girls? Was
I actually able to do so?
Of course, this is not what appears in the job offers but
this is what they actually expect you to be, an older lovely sister that helps
around the house.
All I knew was that I was going to be in an American/Indian
family in Germany, and this was pretty much it! Girls full of activities and
not used to get bored and entertain themselves, parents with apparently not
many requests but driving and cleaning the kids room.
I looked all over Pinterest for little games and nice activities
I could probably do with the 2 little girls (4 and 9 years old) I looked for
what I could make for lunch and what I could teach them. I wanted to be
prepared! I even got them a little gift and while I was getting ready mentally
my suitcase got bigger and bigger with winter clothes and summer clothes.
After saying goodbye to my huge typical Italian family.
I
was ready to leave on February 21st 2015
